For a good understanding of J. Michael Bailey's book The Man Who Would be Queen and its shockingly offensive contents, please see:

Many trans activists thoroughly deconstructed the book and exposed many of its claims as distorted and specious. Sadly, the controversy was picked up by Alice Dreger in 2007, who wrote a lengthy apologia for Bailey in an article to be published in The Archives of Sexual Behavior.

After issuing a CFP for a panel at a conference about the controversy caused by J. Michael Bailey and Alice Dreger, I was attacked by Dreger on the Women’s Studies Listserv. You can read about it here:

I was shocked by such horrid treatment. Curtis Hinkle, Founder and President of the group Organisation Intersex International, stated: “If we had to choose ONE person who has done more harm to the intersex community and who has divided it and crushed it into almost total silence and submission, it would be Dreger.” While she complains about trans advocates trying to “ruin” Bailey, she has no problem trying to “ruin” a struggling graduate student, or anyone else, who dares to disagree with her transphobic analyses.

I was very happy to receive support from many individuals, including people in the blogosphere. Please see the following links regarding this fracas.

Has Alice Dreger Now Become the Bill O’Reilly of Pseudo-Academia? By Katrina Rose

Suspiciously, “Kiira Triea” posted a long post to WMST-L coming to the defense of Bailey and Dreger. While both Bailey and Dreger have embraced the work of “Kiira Treia” and her website www.transkids.us, Andrea James has worked tirelessly to expose her as a fraud and an internet kook. Please see:
