"Joelle is a truly inspirational person. Through her words, she conveys deep emotion and evokes personal courage within to strive to be an overall better human being! She demonstrates through her own life the necessity for us to help each other and not to be quick to judge one another. Joelle and the transgender community have been heavily on my mind and heart since I had the pleasure of listening to Joelle speak at my university. I don't believe I have ever been so truly inspired and given the courage to press on in my own life and to help heal this world."
-An awe-inspired UMKC senior, Tasjha Dixon

"As the keynote speaker for UNH’s 'Illuminating Gender Identities' conference in April of 2006, Joelle Ruby Ryan provided a wealth of insight and inspiration in reference to the current state of transgender studies and trans activism in America. A seasoned academic in the subject areas of Women’s Studies, Cultural Studies, and Film/Media Studies, Joelle is gifted with the ability to present new and often startling information in an accessible way that both engages and challenges audience members...Candidness is Joelle’s forte. Her question and answer sessions are refreshingly honest glimpses into the life of a true 'transgender warrior.' She’s out, she’s proud, and she exudes enough courage to inspire her listeners to confront discrimination head-on and demand equality in a decidedly inequitable world. She concluded her keynote speech with a poignant question for audience members: 'What do you want to leave behind when you die?' she asked. Joelle’s legacy, it seems, is already written on the wall. She is a very brilliant, very brave leader of the gender revolution, and she’s waiting for each and every one of us to join her in the quest for positive change."
